Let’s say one of your members has a mysterious credit balance of $80, but you’re not sure why.  Go to the member’s Invoices tab.  If the member has a credit balance, the “credit balance” link will be clickable: simply click the link to see the related original payment associated with the credit balance.  You can drill down further and see a history of the payment including prior allocations and deallocations resulting in the credit. The principle also applies to receivables or unpaid items.
